Structured problem solving processes alone rarely create a problem solving culture. Getting more and more people to solve problems is a delicate balance between process and people. Effective problem solving facilitators must develop an awareness of sensing the underlying current we cannot see: culture.

Course Overview

This course will examine why structured problem solving alone won’t create a problem solving culture. Process issues tend to fit nicely into our favorite problem solving methods: 8D, A3, DMAIC, etc. People issues are often treated with more training or more communication with less than desired results. We will explore three different types of effort we engage in and their impact on our organizational culture. Using Mike Rother’s “Toyota Kata” we will design experiments intended to create the desired impact in our culture.

Meet Your Trainer

Maria Grzanka is a facilitator and instructor with 20 years experience practicing Lean Six Sigma in tech, manufacturing, healthcare, and logistics. In 2018, Maria quit corporate life to travel and start her own consulting practice. She helps people see process through problem solving workshops and training. Maria volunteers as an organizer and facilitator at Lean Portland and Future of Work Portland. She is also a Process Improvement instructor at Portland State University's Center for Executive and Professional Education. Maria holds a degree in Integrated Supply Management and has led Lean implementations in several large organizations.
